ATTO 550 ist ein neuartiger Fluoreszenzmarker basierend auf einer von den bekannten Laserfarbstoffen Rhodamin 6G und Rhodamin B abgeleiteten Struktur. Zu den charakteristischen Eigenschaften des Farbstoffs zählen starke Absorption, sehr hohe Fluoreszenzquantenausbeute sowie hohe thermische und photochemische Stabilität. ATTO 550 ist ein Gemisch aus drei Isomeren mit praktisch identischen Absorptions- und Fluoreszenzeigenschaften. Eine effiziente Anregung der Fluoreszenz erfolgt im Bereich 540 - 565 nm.
